Adding Additional Taillights to 6 by 10 Utility Trailer

Question:

I am installing a second set of trailer lights higher on the back of my 6 by 10 ft utility trailer. Can you send me a wiring diagram to do this, and can they be wired directly off of the existing taillight wires.

I don't have a wiring diagram specifically suited to what you're wanting to do, but I can certainly explain how to wire the additional lights.

If you're wanting to add the # STL78RB lamps, the red wire taps into the turn signal/brake circuit, the black wire connects to the running lamp circuit and the white wire grounds to the trailer frame. You may tap into the existing trailer taillight circuits. Since these are LED taillights, the additional voltage draw will be minimal.

For your existing taillights, using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 would make identifying what taillight circuit serves which function easier.

I'll also link you to our trailer wiring FAQ article, which you might find helpful.

I have 2018 Crusader Primetime 297RKS fifth wheel. Want to put a 2nd set of tail lights higher up. Back wall is solid, so cant run wire in cavity. Would like to tie into bottom original tail lights and run wire up outside to top new tail lights then caulk where I drill hole in plastic. Also, something to cover the wires that run outside. Not opposed to a bar led type if can be done. And not opposed that 2nd set of tail lights are just above presents. Really want more visability from the back. with ladder, bike rack and spare tire, present lights are obsqure. thanks,

I don't see any issues with this as long as there aren't any legal obstacles (check with your local laws). I would go with LEDs for the added tail lights just to avoid the potential of overloading any circuits. As long as you cover up the wiring to protect everything from the elements I also don't see any problems with running the wires that way. If you like the idea of light bars, the Optronics # STL64RB is a really good option that would work well.
