Recommended Replacement Axle And Brakes For Popup Camper

Question:

I currently have a popup camper 2500 lbs. GVWR that has an axle with no 4-bolt flange to mount electric trailer brakes. I would like to add trailer brakes to my popup. Can you recommend the axle I need for the job? Also, could you recommend the brake assemblies I would need. Thanks.

The axle you need for your popup camper will depend on the width of the camper. If possible, I recommend an axle that comes with the brakes and hubs already installed. This would cut down on a lot of work and hassle piecing a system together. I have attached a helpful article that explains what is needed to add electric brakes to an axle you can check out. when considering new axles and hubs you will want to make sure they match the bolt pattern of the wheels you have. I have attached a helpful article that explains how to measure the bolt pattern of your wheels.

If you measure the width of the trailer and the spring to spring measurement and find that you need an 89 inch axle hub face to hub face and 74 inches spring center to spring center the axle I recommend is part # e43SR. This axle has electric brakes, hubs, drums, bearings, races, seals, and mounting hardware. The axle also features EZ-Lube spindles for simple lubrication.

If you find you need an axle that measures 72 inches hub face to hub face I recommend the Dexter Trailer Idler Axle Beam, part # T20BTR-EZ-7258. This is a 72 inch long axle and has the EZ-Lube spindles.

You will need a brake flange like part # 4-34. This flange fits 1-3/4 inch round axles and has a 4-bolt mounting pattern. This flange needs to be welded to the axle by a certified welder. If not welded precisely, or can lead to improper braking and tire wear, or weaker suspension.

The next items you will need are the hubs for your axle. I recommend the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for Electric Brakes, part # 8-257-5UC3-EZ. This comes with bearings, races, seals, grease cap, bolts and lug nuts.

The brake assemblies I recommend are part # 23-47 for the left hand and part # 23-48 for the right hand.

I have attached a couple of helpful articles you may want to take a look at.
