Troubleshooting Brand New Trailer with Weak Electric Brakes
Question:
Looking for replacement brake assembly options. I have a 2016, 31foot Keystone Cougar travel trailer. It has Dexter 4400 lb Axles, Dex# 53194424 with electric drum brakes. Im not happy with the braking performance of these brakes compared with other trailers I have and tow. Are their options/manufactures other than the Dexter brake assemblies that came with this trailer that I can replace these with without replacing the entire axles? What if any additional information or measurements would I need to find a suitable replacement? Thanks

If your trailer is brand new and the brakes aren't working well enough there is a very strong chance you have self-adjusting brakes that just haven't fully adjusted and because of that the brake performance is weak. This is a common problem that can easily be remedied by going out to an empty parking lot and applying the trailer brakes several times so that they set themselves up correctly. You should feel the brakes get more and more powerful with every application.
Try that first and then get back to me.
