How to Connect Hopkins Reliance Brake Controller to Toyota OEM Brake Controller Pigtail

Question:

I have a Reliance brake controller that wired for my 2013 Toyota, Tundra. It worked great! Now I have traded in my Tundra for a 2015 tundra and find the wiring has changed! Can you help me? The Reliance controller I have has a No. 14121above the wires 4 leading from the controller. The adapter wiring for the 2015 Tundra plugs into the existing plug under the dashboard and then to the Toyota brake controller. The adapter has 4 wires, same colors as the Reliance, but for the 2013 Tundra the adapter plug that came with the Tundra-it was wired to Reliance differently- from the Reliance red wire it went to the Tundra green/white, from the reliance white to Tun. light brown, From the Rel. blue to the Tun. red and from the Rel. black to the Tun. Black/red. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Mel

It sounds like you have the Toyota OEM brake controller pigtail. My industry contacts haven't encountered the OEM pigtail from the Tundra yet, so they weren't able to provide any guidance as to the wire color coding. You said that the pigtail used the same wire colors as the controller, is that correct? If so, the controller will likely wire up color for color. You'll want to test that, however.

Use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 on the pigtail after you've plugged it in with the vehicle ignition on. One of the pigtail wires should show a constant 12-volt power, this wire would connect to the black wire on your brake controller. One pigtail wire should only show power when the brake pedal is pressed. Connect to the red wire. Of the remaining two wires, one is the ground, one is the brake output circuit. Do a continuity test on the brake output pin on the trailer connector (it's the pin in the 5:00 position) and both remaining wires. The wire that shows continuity is the output circuit, which connects to the blue brake controller wire. The remaining wire is the ground.

OR, you could avoid the testing and pick up # 3031-S which WOULD wire to your controller color for color.

I'll link you to some FAQ articles that you might find helpful.
