Winch and Strap Recommendation for Use on Boat Trailer for Bayliner Capri 2150

Question:

Ive got an 88 Bayline Capri 2150, and need to replace the winch. I dont recall the actual brand/model trailer right now, but can provide that if needed, just let me know. Would the Dutton-Lainson DL15440 be the best match, or would you recommend a different brand or model? Also, how does one decide if should use a strap or a cable? Thanks

The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15440 will work well for you on your boat trailer.

Based on my research, your Bayliner Capri 2150 weights somewhere between 2,500 and 3,000 pounds. Usually the boat size to hand winch capacity is 2 to 1. Depending on rollers and bunks, as well as distance factors, that ratio can go up or down. When using wooden bunks and having a long winching distance, the ratio is decreased to 1 to 1. Even in these situations, the Dutton-Lainson winch # DL15440 will work well for you, because it has a capacity of 3,200 pounds.

Generally a strap is used with a winch for a boat. Because of the wet environment, steel cables will corrode or rust when used to winch a boat. The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook # DL24251 would work well as a strap for the winch on your boat trailer. It has a capacity of 4,800 pounds, and is 20 feet long.
