There are some additional steps you will want to take to install your Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller # 90195 in your 2009 Volkswagen Touareg. There are some additional parts you will need to order from your Volkswagen Dealer. These parts will allow you to create a custom connector to install your brake controller with your vehicle's factory brake control connector. This connector is located under the dash, close to the driver's side door. The appearance panel will have to be removed and the connector is wrapped in gray foam.
You will also want to install the relay, as you mentioned. A 12 volt, normally open relay can be bought locally, likely at an auto parts store. This relay will need to be installed downstream from your brake controller's pigtail, and before the brake control connector.
I have attached a link to a help article on installing your brake controller in your 2009 Touareg.
