How do Brake Controllers Detect if They are Connected to a Trailer

How does the Hopkins brake controller know the trailer is hooked up. Is it the ground?

Brake controllers like the Hopkins Agility # HM47294 that you referenced will periodically send out a low amount of voltage on the brake output circuit looking for the load of brake magnets. If the load is detected it will read that it is connected to a trailer.
