Troubleshooting Draw-Tite Activator IV Brake Controller # 5504 on 2015 Harley Road Glide CVO

Question:

I have the harness wired to the bike. Black wire +12 VDC White wire Ground Red wire = 0 VDC till break is applied then +12 VCD Blue wire = center pin to Aspen trailer brake With Draw Tite iv controller attached one red dot in the window. Pull brake still 1 red dot in window Pull manual spring switch on controller no change, Red Dot Trailer brake lights come on. I never get the opportunity to set voltage amount or delay on unit. Trailer brakes do not seem to be engaging. What can I do to either. Send unit in for evaluation, replace, repair, or do I need to purchase another unit? Or, troubleshoot trailer brakes to make sure they are good?

Since the red dot means that the Draw-Tite Activator IV Trailer Brake Controller, # 5504, is not sensing a connection with the trailer brakes, the issue is most likely related to a wiring problem or brake magnet problem. I recommend using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993, to locate the issue. I would start by checking to make sure that the connector on the 2015 Harley Road Glide and the connector on the Aspen trailer are pinned the same, same function on same pin.

Next, I would probe the blue wire behind the controller to check for current. If there is current, then it sounds like the issue is with the trailer. I would start by inspecting the brake wire for damage and also make sure that the grounds for the brakes are secure and attached to a clean metal surface.

If there is no current on the blue wire then there is an issue with the brake controller and it will need to be replaced.
