Recommended Weight Distribution For 2006 Ford F-350 With Lift Kit Towing Trailer

Question:

I have a 2006 Ford F-350 Super Duty with the 6.0L diesel engine. The truck has an 8 inch lift with 37inch tires. I am looking to get a pull behind trailer with a dry weight of 9700lbs and a tongue weight of 1360lbs. I want to make sure this hitch can handle the weight of the trailer. Attached is a picture of the trailer I am looking to get. Thank you for your help.

Thank you for the photo of the trailer you are planning on towing. Since you plan on towing a trailer that size I recommend using a weight distribution system with sway control. This would keep the trailer level and the sway control will help keep the trailer steady on the road when passing large trucks and in high winds.

The most important thing you need to know when selecting a WD system is the tongue weight and also the trailer weight. Tongue weight is the tongue weight of the trailer when it is full loaded and ready to go added to the weight of any cargo you plan on carry behind the rear axle of your truck.

You want the tongue weight to fall as close to the middle of the tongue weight range of a WD system as you can get. Based on the numbers you gave me I recommend a system like the Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution w Sway Control, part # RP66561. This has a gross towing weight capacity of 14,000 lbs and a tongue weight capacity of 1,400 lbs.

With the lift kit on your truck you will probably need an adjustable shank with quite a bit of drop. I have attached a link to the adjustable shanks you can check out. You will want to make sure the trailer is as near level as possible. When you are setting it up you can expect about 3/4 to 1/1/2 inches of drop when you hook the trailer up so you will want to make sure that is taken into account.

If you find you need a shank with a 7 inch drop I recommend the Curt Welded Adjustable Weight Distribution Shank, part # C17122.

I have attached a link to a helpful article about weight distribution you can check out.
