For your 2010 Chevy 3500HD, I recommend the Tekonsha P-3 Trailer Brake Controller, # 90195. This unit will work with electric brakes and electric over hydraulic brakes so it will work with both trailers. This unit has many features such as a continual diagnostic check, ability to work proportionally in reverse, and an easy to read display.

If your truck has a factory tow package, all you will need is the brake controller. The wires needed are tucked up under the dash, to the right of the emergency brake, held together with white tape. The wire colors could be, but not always, Red/Black, connects to the black wire on the brake controller. White, connects to white on the brake controller. Light Blue/White, connects to red on the brake controller. Dark blue, connects to the blue wire on the brake controller. If you also see and orange wire, it is not needed.

You can test these wires to be sure using a circuit tester like # PTW2993. The wire that carries a constant 12-volt signal attaches to the black brake controller wire. The wire that carries a signal ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed connects to the brake controller blue wire. Ground will most likely be white and the brake output will more than likely be blue.

If you do not have a tow package, you will also need Twist-in, 7-Pole, RV-Style Trailer Connector, # PK11916. After installing the brake controller as described above, you will install this connector at the rear of the truck. The harness is already behind the bumper, you just plug in the connector and installation is complete. I have included an install video for this connector below along with the brake controller installation details.
