Will Negative Offset Rims Increase Wear on Bearings
Question:
Our trailer is 13 year old so Im thinking of replacing the Nev-R-Lube bearings before a long trip this fall. These rims are marked -8mm? offset. Dexter maintains this must be 0 offset. Bearings pass inspections but are weeping grease. Approximately 3000 miles on these rims. Will these rims with negative offset cause any increased wear on these bearing? I purchased these aluminum rims about 6 years ago. Nev-R-Lube Bearings

I spoke with my contact at Dexter and he said there shouldn't be a problem using rims with a -8mm inset (not offset) with their hubs, though ideally they prefer a 0 offset. A -8mm inset would not increase wear on your bearings. If you had a large offset it could potentially wear the bearings.
