What are the Functions of the Brake Controller Port Pins in a 2005 Chevy Silverado Junction Box
Question:
Hello: The installation instructions for the Prodigy Controller say WARNING - hooking up the Controller incorrectly can damage the unit. I have a 2005 Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab that the previous owner used to tow a camper. I do not know what, if any, modifications he has made to the OEM wiring harness for the trailer towing connections. The truck has the factory trailer towing package The seven pins at the plug-in connection at the rear hitch - seem to correspond to the diagram on the snap-down cover. Starting at the 11:00 position and going clockwise: Running lights/lights + Hot Right Stop/turn Electric Brakes Ground Left Stop/turn Center pole - Back-up lamps. I understand that the Prodigy Trailer Brake Controller can be purchased with a Prodigy Wiring Harness - that is supposed to be a simple plug and play. I would like to check the electrical pins, in the under-dash junction box BEFORE I plug a Prodigy Trailer Brake Controller in. Where can I find a simple diagram that would tell me which pins, in the six pin connector in the junction box, are supposed to be hot, and under what conditions - as well as which are supposed to be grounds. thanks,

I can tell you what the functions on the brake controller port on your 2005 Chevy Silverado are supposed to be. If you are looking at the port, top left is for electric brake output. To test this wire you would have to run a current through it and test the 7-Way at the rear of the vehicle for the current using a circuit tester like the Quickee # 3808.
Top right is the stop light switch. Test it by applying the brakes. It should have a signal ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed.
Middle left is 12 volt power. Turn the key on and it should have a constant 12 volt signal.
Bottom right is ground.
If you find that your port is wired differently, you have two options. 1) Rewire the 3015-P connector or 2) Rewire the port on the junction box. It is probably easiest to re-pin the connector to match the port.
I have included instructions for the Prodigy Brake Controller, # 90885 below. You would also need Tekonsha Wire Replacement, # 3015-P, to plug into the port on your Silverado.
