How to Determine Axle Capacity of Keystone Cougar High Country 5th Wheel

Question:

I just received your Ez Flex kit and figured that I may as well change springs as well, but I cant tell which Dexter axle I have on my 2012 Keystone Cougar High Country. The only label was the shipping label to Keystone with some numbers like D44 and HF=85.00 SC=68.50 and P13-Albion and possibly a serial # 248744. The current springs are 4 leaf and I would want to upgrade to 5 or 6 leaf. It looks like 25.25 inches eye to eye LOADED. Saw another question and the info plate shows GVWR of 10,000 lbs and GAWR for each axle at 4400 lbs. What spring update do you recommend?

Expert Reply:

The D44 on your axle tells me that you have a Dexter D44 axle, which has a 4400 lb capacity. Given that, and the length of the leaf spring you provided, the etrailer # e28SR would make for a good replacement spring.

Increasing the capacity of your springs won't increase the weight bearing capability of your trailer. You'll still be limited by the axle capacity, the capacity of the tires, hubs, wheels, etc.
