Will Handling of Gooseneck Trailer Worsen Using Offset Ball
Question:
Does using an offset ball re-introduce some of the less desireable traits of tow behind trailers ie: sway, etc? I am going gooseneck for my first large trailer on the advice of others, as we all tow in the winter and require max performance. While the offset will probably find its way into my truck 07 Tundra 6.5foot bed, am I better to use the 9inch offset on the trailer, or use this 5, or both? Am I going to start feeling sway and movement from the big rigs blowing by with the pivot point moved behind the axle?

I spoke with my contact at Draw-Tite and he said using an offset ball will not significantly increase trailer sway on a gooseneck trailer. If you are experiencing sway, the best defense is proper trailer loading. If you can load your trailer so that the tongue weight is between 10 and 15 percent of the total trailer weight you will reduce sway as much as possible. Also too much weight forward is very hard on the vehicle and too little weight forward is hard on the trailer, especially the tires. If tongue weight gets too low sway is inevitable. I have included a FAQ article on determining trailer tongue weight for you to check out.
