How to Set the Right Power Output on a Brake Controller when Towing a Trailer
Question:
I have a 2009 Coachman Sprit of America M-24 RBQS and it weighs about 4300 lbs. I am using the Hayes 81726 brake and towing it with a 2006 Chevy Silverado with a full tow package. Where approximately should my settings be on the electric brake?

For any brake controller, including the Hayes Blackbird, the set up process is basically the same. You start by setting the controller to the mid point for power output. Then with the truck and trailer coupled together on level, dry ground, tow at about 20 miles per hour or so. Then apply the manual override on full (not the truck's brake pedal).
If the trailer brakes lock up and skid, adjust the power down and do the test again. If braking is insufficient then adjust the power up and do the test again. Keep fine tuning it until you get the brakes to the point just under lockup.
