Recommended 4-Bike Platform Style Bike Rack for Carbon Fiber Framed Bikes
Question:
First, I appreciate all of the good detail that etrailer.com provides regarding these two hitch mounted bike racks on the site already. I am having difficulty deciding between these two racks. Mike L. provides some great insight in comments on the site, but one particular comment caught my eye. If I understand correctly, Mike referenced that if someone like me has a carbon fiber bikes, it would be better to go with the Semi 4.0 vs. a Swagman Quad 2+2 or XTC 4.0 because it is not designed to come into contact with the frame. My first question is, does this also apply to the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE? It appears that the Sport Rider SE has nearly the same method of securing the bike in place as the Semi 4.0, and I am curious if this means that it is also a good fit for carbon fiber bikes and will keep them protected. I like that both models appear very sturdy, and that both are able to be converted down to two bike racks when necessary. I do like that the Swagman comes with the lock and cable as opposed to the Yakima where it must be purchased separately, but then again it appears that the full get up for the Semi 4.0 once you include the add on for additional bikes pushes the price up another $150-$200. In the end, I want a very sturdy, stable, protective and functional hitch mounted bike rack that will accommodate up to four carbon fiber bikes with the option to shrink down the rack to hold only two bikes. Thank you in advance for your assistance!

For bikes with fragile carbon fiber frames, using a bike rack that holds the bike by the frame isn't recommended.
The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE, part # HR1400Z is an excellent bike rack, however it does hold the bikes by the frame, so I wouldn't recommend it for a bike with a carbon fiber frame. The Swagman Quad # S64FR would hold the bikes the same way, so unfortunately I couldn't recommend it either.
The Saris SuperClamp EX Bike Rack for 4 Bikes - 2" Hitches # SA4026F would hold the bikes by the wheels and tires only, which would not apply any stress to the bike frame. Because of that, it would be a much better choice for carbon fiber framed bikes. The rack is very sturdy and stable, and would do an excellent job keeping your expensive bicycles safe.
