Troubleshooting Vehicle that Won't Shift Out of Park After Roadmaster Brake Lite Relay Install  

Question:

We have a 2014 Honda CR-V on which I installed an RM-88400. Everything seemed to work just fine at first, but then we experienced a situation that the Honda dealer says may be caused by the relay. What the situation is, is that the shift lever locks in PARK. Interestingly enough, the Honda owners manual has a fix for this under TROUBLE SHOOTING. It requires the driver to engage the emergency brake, remove the key from the ignition and push it down into a slot next to the shift lever on the console so that the shift lever can be moved to Neutral. Then you can start the car, release the brake and except for 3 idiot warning lights that come on, drive the car as normal. These lights normally reset themselves and go off once you shut the car off. The first time this happened, everything returned to normal as soon as we turned the car off. Then, it occurred a second time while on the same trip and it did not reset until after about six times of driving the car. As a result, we had to go through the process of using the key to release the shift lever everytime we got into the car. When we returned from our trip, we took the car into our Honda dealer and they said that it appeared to be caused by the relay, and the only way to be sure was to undo all of my wiring. I told them to leave it alone, because I didnt want to have them experimenting on our car. Anyway, my question is, Have you had anyone else report an experience like this, and if so, is there a possible fix for it? Understand, I am not upset with your company in any way, I just would like to know if there is anything I should/could do to keep this from happening in the future. I would like to say that your videos and written narratives are FANTASTIC. I would never have considered doing any of this without it!!!

I spoke to my contact at Roadmaster and they have seen the problem you are describing and it means one of two things. Either the wires from the brake light relay are making a bad connection or the brake light wire that runs from the relay to the interior of the tow vehicle has shorted out and has blown the stoplight fuse and that is why.

Check the brake light fuse. If it is blown the second scenario I described is what is happening. You would need to track down the short that is causing the fuse to blow and fix as needed. If the fuse is good then the problem is the wiring of the relay to the stoplight circuit of your 2014 Honda CR-V.
