Best Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation 2015 Ram 2500 Short Bed without Hitch Prep Package
Question:
Hello, I am embarking on new territory in my research on 5th wheel setups and equipment and so far am impressed with the BandW offerings. I really like the idea of the under bed design and the trend towards more of a custom look and design. I shared your website with one of my friends who currently 5th wheels several times a year. He has the typical bed mounted cross bars for his hitch base which to me are ugly and as you well know, are in the way when it comes time to load the bed with other things. What really concerns us both about the design of the Companion hitch is the single attachment point that is held in place by only the lock pin. My first impression is that it would be inadequate, especially when braking and accelerating and have a tendency to want to pull up and out of the ball hole. It also seems like it would demand a lot of shear strength on the lock pin mechanism itself. As far as appearance and quality of design otherwise, it is my first choice. Please share your thoughts and practical experience surrounding my concerns with the attachment design and its safety.

The B and W Companion gooseneck hitches like the # BWGNRK1384-5W that you referenced are an excellent rail system for adding a Companion fifth wheel like the Slider # BWRVK3400.
The Companion hitches are one of the nicest hitch setups on the market. If you look anywhere online this is one of the highest recommended hitches from the guys who tow a lot. The main portion of the hitch that attaches to the tow vehicle is through the gooseneck hole, but the feet of the hitch on the outsides of it also provide support and that is why the problem you described is not an issue.
If you have a 2015 Ram 2500 with a short bed that does not have the factory underbed hitch prep package the # BWGNRK1384-5W would be the correct rail kit/gooseneck hitch and the # BWRVK3400 would be the correct hitch to use. Since you have a short bed truck you would need the Slider hitch to allow you make sharp turns.
