How to Wire 3rd Brake Light on Trailer When Using Vehicle to Vehicle Tail Light Converter # C56196

Question:

I have a 56195 converter installed in my vehicle which provides lights to the trailer. Im looking to install a 3rd brake light on the trailer. Tapped into the right brake light on the trailer and it works when braking but blinks with the right turn signal. To have it just light up when braking, would I just need to install a 56195 within the trailer to connect the 3rd brake light or would I need the diode kit also?

The Curt Vehicle to Vehicle Tail Light Converter # C56196 that you installed in your vehicle separates the combined stop/turn signals that are fed to its (left-hand) input side and outputs individual turn and stop signals on the output side.

The green output wire carries RIGHT turn, the yellow output wire carries LEFT turn and the red wire carries the STOP light signal.

You can connect a third brake light for the trailer directly to the red output wire without use of any diodes or other components.

This Curt converter is not meant to be exposed to the elements so either mount it in a protected place or install a junction box like the Spectro # 38656 to serve as a shielded mounting point.
