Will Using Weight Distribution Make Trailer Tow Out of Level

Question:

Right now I tow with a standard 2inch hitch which makes my trailer level with my truck. If I get a WDH, isnt that going to make the trailer sit up and tow at a angle?

No, it won't. We offer various weight distributing shanks which would allow you to place the trailer ball so it's about 1 to 1-1/2 inches over level, which is what's recommended for a weight distribution system. To determine the rise/drop needed for your shank, take a look at the FAQ article I've linked you to. The article is for ball mounts, but he procedure would be the same for a weight distribution shank. Just remember to add an inch to an inch and a half of rise to compensate for any rear end squat from the tow vehicle.

To choose a weight distribution system, you'll need to first determine the fully loaded and ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer. To that figure, add the weight of any gear stowed in the truck bed behind the rear axle. I've linked to an FAQ article that explains how to do this. These combined figures comprise the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your set-up. The TTW of your trailer should fall as close as possible to the middle of the effective range of the weight distribution system you choose.

I'd be happy to recommend a weight distribution system for you, if you'd provide some more information about your trailer, such as its fully loaded tongue weight, the type of trailer and its overall length. You can simply reply to this email with that information.
