Why Can Only 2 Bikes Be Carried on a Class I Trailer Hitch
Question:
I heard it mentioned in your how to video, and on an expert reply. Im wondering why only 2 bikes with this Class 1 Hitch. Isnt the tongue weight 200 lbs? Im new to hitches, have never owned one. Im not questioning your expertise, just trying to understand. Im looking at options to carry bikes on my new car. Thanks so much for your time.

On a Class I trailer hitch you are limited to 2 bikes but it isn't because of the weight, it is the distance that weight is from the receiver. A third or more bikes are too far from the receiver and it produces more leverage than the hitch and where it is attached on the vehicle can handle. Its the same principle as using a long wrench to loosen a lug nut.
To carry 3 bikes on your 2015 Toyota Prius II you can use a trunk mount carrier such as # TH911XT. It will work with models that have a solar panel roof but not models that have the panoramic glass roof.
If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance. I have to use these adapters and without them my wife's bike would be at a severe angle and I would not be able to load my son's bike at all. I have linked a video showing how the adapter works.
