How to Tell On Which Side of a Trailer a Drum Brake Assembly Mounts
Question:
How do you determined the right and left side of the wheel axles on a trail?
asked by: Pernell
Helpful Expert Reply:
Electric and hydraulic drum brakes are designed for left- or right-hand placement on a trailer axle. This not the case for disc brakes, however. On a drum brake assembly the shorter of the two brake pads should face forward. For example, right-hand brake assembly # 23-459 has its shorter pad facing forward when mounted on the passenger side of a trailer.
Beam trailer axles are NOT "handed" in the same way; they can be installed in either direction. Some axle-less suspension systems like Timbren's # ASR5200S01 DO have left- and right-handed parts.
