Charging RV battery with 12-Volt Accessory Circuit from 7-Way Trailer Connector

Question:

Do I need something separate from the existing wiring to charge the battery when it is hooked up

Expert Reply:

The 12-volt accessory circuit from the 7-way connector will provide a maintenance charge to the trailer mounted battery, but due to the small gauge of the wire, the distance away from the tow vehicle battery and the capabilities of the alternator, the circuit will lack the punch needed to charge a dead or partially discharged battery.

If the battery is dead or almost discharged, you'll need to use shore power and a battery charger like the CTEK # CTEK56353.

You could also keep the battery fully charged by using a DC to DC converter like # 331-BCDC1240D. This would use your tow vehicle's alternator to charge the RV battery while the tow vehicle is running.
