How Tight Should Curt Bar Style Friction Sway Control Be

Question:

After 150 miles, the 90 degree corner turn to our street, we heard a noise and then it sounded like something dragging. Pulling over, the sway bar was on the ground and the ball was missing. We walked back and it was on the ground in two pieces. I had the screw tightened as instructions, just to the end of the threads. So, I am asking just how tight is this supposed to be?? The trailer is a 5x10 haulmark trailer with just a couple of bicycles in it and small stuff.

How tight to make a friction sway bar such as # 17200 is going to depend on the trailer. Some trailers require more tension than others. The only way to know is to test it out and adjust as needed.

If it is too tight and you make a sharp turn then the system will not have enough give and it can lead to problems like you have experienced.
