Utility Trailer Coupler Will Not Secure Around Trailer Hitch Ball

Question:

I have a Leonard Utility Trailer, Model # TRLU-0510LEO-152, that recently has not been locking onto my hitch ball. The trailer has an A-frame coupler 2inch Class III that is weld-on and it was built 02/2011. I tried to load something in my trailer recently and when I was entering it up the ramp, the trailer tilted up in the front and come off the hitch ball, resulting in damaging my tailgate. Ive never had this issue with a trailer coupler not locking and am uncertain the cause or problem. As I have taken the coupler apart, I see no damage to the wedge itself or any of its components. I have tried tightening the nut on the bottom of the coupler and loosening it as well nothing works, it still disengages. I have also tried positioning the wedge above and below the bar that is in the coupler itself, but with it below the bar, I cant get it open enough to engage the ball inside the coupler. Any ideas?

Having a system that doesn't work properly can be a very unsettling problem.

If the coupler is not locking on the trailer ball, it sounds like you actually have a ball that is too small. Check out the coupler and the size ball required is typically stamped into the coupler somewhere.

Check the latch pin on the coupler to see if it is bent. If so, let me know what the make and model of the coupler is and we can see if there is a repair kit available.

I think the problem may be that you have a 2 inch coupler on your trailer and are using a 1-7/8 inch ball that could also be an issue. I have attached a link to the trailer hitch balls we offer you can check out. I have also attached a link to a helpful article about trailer balls you can take a look at. You will need to know the size shank on the ball you need for your ball mount.
