Intermittent Output Short -No Brakes Message on a Tekonsha P3 Being Used with Carlisle Hydrastar
Question:
I have an intermittent problem with the system. All wiring is good and for troubleshooting the wiring and plug has been bypassed and problem is still there. Output shorted No brakes message comes on and occasionaly the brakes go to full power even with the brake applied gently.

The Tekonsha P-3 has an electric over hydraulic mode. If the brake controller is not set to electric over hydraulic, it will not properly function. Page 4 of the instructions explains how to set the brake controller for the proper type of trailer brake be it electric or hydraulic.
If you write back with the model of the Hydrastar, I can provide more specific help.
Depending on the model of Carlisle Hydrastar actuator you have, it may have a built in brake controller and there is no need for the P3. The Hydrastar XL, part # HBAC10-CLR already has a brake controller built in and has a wireless remote that plugs into the cigarette lighter port for a manual over-ride. The Hydrastar Electric-Hydraulic Actuator, part # HBA16, does not have an integrated brake controller and would need something like a Tekonsha P3.
