Can I Re-Use the Universal Fifth Wheel Install Kit and Hitch from my Old Truck on a 2009 GMC 1500

Question:

I have a 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab with a box length of 5 10. I would like to install a Reese 15K hitch which I removed from my previous truck which was a GMC extended cab. Is this a problem? Can I use the old universal kit? Can I purchase brackets and bolts for the new and different frame type? I plan to purchase and install a Reese sidewinder on my trailer.

The Sidewinder would be a great choice. It will add the extra clearance needed and you will not have to get out of your truck to the unlock a slider.

You can re-use the old universal install kit and hitch from your previous truck. If you will be installing this yourself, I would recommend purchasing a set of custom fit brackets, part # 50064. They significantly cut down install time by using factory frame holes and they are shaped to better fit the frame. Part 50064 is the frame brackets and hardware. You can re-use the old rails and rail bolts if you wish.

If you would rather start fresh with a whole new install kit, you would use part # RP50064-58 that you were looking at. I have added a link to a video of this kit being installed on a similar truck model as well as the instructions for the kit.

Remember, if your bed has a drop in plastic liner, you will need to cut out the plastic where the rails will sit. They need to be directly on the bed.
