Options For Carrying 4 Bikes On 2006 Volkswagen Passat Wagon

Question:

Hi my husband has a vw Passat wagon 2006. We need a bike rack suggestion for the rear for 2-4 bikes. So far 2 adult bikes and 1 kid bike but soon will add 1 more kid bike. Please let us know options. Thanks!

The bike rack I recommend for your 2006 Volkswagen Passat is the Thule OutWay 3-Bike Rack # TH56BV. It comes with all the integrated locking features to keep your bikes and the rack itself secure to your vehicle. The OutWay is the easiest and fasted to install. This rack is rated for bikes up to 33 lbs each. I have attached a product review video for this bike rack you can check out.

Since your Passat is limited to Class l trailer hitches, you would only be able to carry 2 bikes on a hitch, so that would not be an ideal way to go.

The third option would be to use a roof rack mounted bike rack along with the trunk mount carrier to be able to carry 4 bikes. I have attached a link to our product page for the roof racks we offer for your Passat if it has the factory side-rails installed. If you have crossbars on your roof rack, you would just need to find a bike rack that can attach to the crossbars to be able to carry all the bikes in the future.

Finally, the last option I can recommend is to use a 3-bike carrier and to place the forth bike in the rear cargo area of the Passat. It may be a little crowded but would certainly be the most economical option to carry 4 bikes.

For bikes that have alternative frames like kids or women's bikes, I recommend using an adapter bar like part # 64005. This attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and provides a level way to carry the bikes in the carrier.
