Need for Charger on Battery on Trailer Break-Away System

Question:

Cant I connect the 12v hot in the 7 pin harness to the breakaway battery + terminal , without a battery charger? Wont the truck charge the breakaway battery just as it does the truck battery?? Why do you need a charger? Thanks

I strongly recommend using the charger. The charger, like part # 20011 will protect the break away battery from overcharging or charging too quickly.

The charger is a small investment, and it is easy to install.

If you should decide that you are interested in the charger, it would wire as follows: the black wire would connect to the 12-volt supply circuit off of the 7-way, the red wire attaches to the positive terminal of the break away battery, and the blue wire connects to the break away switch.
