Best Box for 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon Carrying 74 inch Skis

Question:

I need to be able to fit 186cm skis into a box for my 2011 Subaru Outback, but Thule is telling me that this isnt possible. Is that true? I have the factory mounted siderails with the square Thule crossbar system that mounts to the siderails. I still need to be able to open my tailgate. Can you point me in the right direction? I like the Thule Sonic system because of the aerodynamics because I drive a lot, but I am open to ideas. Thanks!

In order to determine which cargo boxes will fit your 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon and not interfere with the rear hatch you will need to take one measurement. First, if the crossbars on the factory roof rack can be moved, move the front bar as far forward as it will go. Then measure from the center of the front bar straight back to the seam between the roof and the top of the rear hatch.

This is a critical measurement. It is possible that none of the boxes that will fit without hatch interference will also hold skis that are 74 inches long. Once I know the measurement you come up with I can determine the boxes that will fit and if any of them can hold your 74 inch long skis.

Another option is to use a ski carrier. The Thule SnowPak, # TH7326 is a great option. It holds 6 skis or 4 snowboards. It costs much less than a cargo box. The carrier can also be locked with the included locks and keys. I have linked a video review of this carrier for you.
