Pickup Truck for Towing Grand Design 5th Wheel with 8500-lb Dry Weight
Question:
We are going to purchase a GMC Sierra 1/2 ton with a 3.42 axle and the 6,2 v-8.gas engine, short bed. The trailer is a Grand Design Reflection 29RS dry weight 8500 with a hitch weight of 1426 what trailer hitch is best? And will this work or do we need the Ford 150?

Expert Reply:
Generally we recommend 3/4-ton long bed trucks for 5th wheel towing. Although the 2007 - 2013 Sierras with 6.2L V8 have 400+ horsepower (enough power for your trailer's weight) the short bed makes maneuvering the 5th wheel a challenge since you have reduced turning clearance. Short bed trucks CAN be used for 5th wheels by using a slider hitch or better still a Sidewinder. A Sidewinder replacement pin box extends the pivot point rearward from the hitch by 22-inches, almost double the additional clearance of a slider hitch. Plus, with a Sidewinder you don't have to get out of the truck to release the hitch every time you make a tight turn.
If you already own the trailer, check the pin box sticker for a brand and part number, and then refer to the linked article on Sidewinder replacement pin boxes. The article includes a cross reference of OEM to Sidewinder pin boxes and if you have one of the pin boxes listed you can see the Sidewinder that will bolt on in its place. We offer standard and air-cushioned types as well.
Hitch fits will vary depending on your exact truck model year and version. If you have a 1500 series with 8-ft bed the 5th wheel hitch I suggest is the Curt # C16120 along with the custom install kit # RP50064-58. This hitch features a cushioned 360-degree pivoting head for easier hitching on uneven ground and the custom install kit reduces your install time. This hitch is NOT compatible with a Sidewinder, please note.
You can use the linked page to enter your truck information to see recommended hitches. Once you know your truck choice, feel free to let me know and I will be glad to suggest a hitch.
