Weight Distribution Recommendation for a Horse Trailer that Allow Backing Up

Question:

Hi, I am trying to decide which weight distribution system to go with for my horse trailer with GVWR of 5,600 lbs. I am thinking about the RP66153. I currently use a 6inch drop on my hitch with a 2inch ball. I do want to be able to back up with the system hooked up and my trailer has electric brakes. Will this product work for me or is there something else that you can recommend? Thanks,

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

Since you need a drop of 6 inches you will want a system that does not include a shank so that you can go with a different one that will allow that much drop. The shank you will need is part # C17122 as it can do a drop of up to 7 inches.

Assuming your GWVR is what your trailer will be when loaded you are looking at a tongue weight range of 560-840 lbs. For a system rated for that I would recommend the # RP66074. This system has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs, features the only sway control on the market that works to prevent sway before it starts, and allow backing up.
