Can I Flat Tow a 2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder

Question:

We are thinking of buying a 2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder for flat towing. We wanted to make sure that we could purchase base plate and tow bars for this particular model. Blue Ox said they did not carry anything for a 2003 MR2 Spyder. We would like to know before we purchase this vehicle tomorrow.

If your 2003 Toyota MR2 Spyder is an automatic it must be towed on a trailer, it cannot be flat towed. If it is a manual, it can be flat towed. You will want to check with your vehicle owner's manual to confirm this.

Roadmaster base plates, # 1169-1, are a confirmed fit for your vehicle. If you have a Blue Ox tow bar you can use the adapter # RM-033. To make the draw-bar arms on the base plates removable, use adapter # RM-032. This adapter comes with quick disconnects so you can remove the draw-bar arms making the base plates nearly invisible on the vehicle when you are not towing.

You will also need safety cables like # RM-643. The coiled design will keep the cables off of the ground. For lighting, there are a few options. If you do not plan on towing the vehicle often, I recommend using a magnetic lighting system like # RM-2120. I don't show an option for a more permanent lighting solution. You can check with your dealer who may have an option available.

Most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Even Brake # RM-9400. This is a proportional system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the towing vehicle is braking. Proportional systems are the safest way to stop and they reduce wear and tear on both vehicles.
