Installing Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch on 2013 Ram w/ Factory Tow Prep Package Without Using Adapter

Question:

I have a 2013 Ram 3500 Dually short bed truck with the towing prep group. Can I get an automatic slider hitch that doesnt need the PR 30154 mounting adapter kit?

To tow a fifth wheel trailer using the factory tow prep package on a short bed Ram, I'd recommend using a standard, non-sliding 5th wheel hitch like part # RP30918 and installing a Sidewinder to replace the OEM pin box on your 5th wheel. The Sidewinder you need will depend on the manufacturer and model number of the existing pin box. This information should be stamped on the pin box somewhere. You'll also need the wedge kit # RP44FR to prevent the king pin of the sidewinder from pivoting in the jaws of the # RP30918.

I'll link you to our Sidewinder FAQ article that lists all the OEM pinboxes and their Sidewinder replacements. Going with a Sidewinder would move the swivel point between the hitch and the fifth wheel rearward by 22 inches, twice the distance of a sliding hitch. This will provide plenty of clearances between the truck and the fifth wheel, and you won't need to exit the truck to slide the hitch.

If you don't already have a 7-way installed in your truck bed, you can install one using part # 41157.

Unfortunately, I'm not aware of an automatic slider that would be compatible with the tow prep package of your Ram.
