Troubleshooting Agility Brake Controller not Locking Up Trailer Brakes on a 2008 Ford F-150

Question:

I had the Agility electric brake control insatlled on my 2008 Ford F150 with tow package, by the dealer where I purchased the truck. I have all of the adjustments at the highest setting, and following written instructions, can not get my wheels to lock up on my twin axel rv trailer that has a GVW of 6000 lbs. I have pulled this trailer with my older truck with a different brand of brake controller and every thing worked just fine. Is there somthing that you can suggest or should I take it back to my Ford dealer? Thank you,

There are a couple of things you can check on the trailer to help troubleshoot the problem. First, the magnets might be worn and/or the brakes might need adjustment. If neither of these is the problem, you can begin to test the brake controller itself.

I spoke with my contact at Hopkins about the problem you are having with the Agility, # HM47294. He stated that there are 3 possible issues. First, there could be a problem with the internal components of the brake controller itself. This would mean you would need a new brake controller.

Second, there could be a weak connection somewhere in the wiring. You would check all connections for any loose or broken wires.

Third, the wiring on the 2008 Ford F-150 that was used may not be a heavy enough gauge to carry the necessary power to make the brakes lock up.

There is a test you could do to check and see if the brake controller is the problem. Disconnect the blue wire from the brake controller and test it with a circuit tester like # PTW2993. You will need to use the manual switch at the highest level. The tester should give you a very bright light as opposed to a lower setting on the brake controller. If you do get a bright light, then the brake controller is fine, and the issue will be the wiring back to the trailer or the trailer itself.

One of our installers stated that the brakes will likely not lock up at speed but might lock up at lower speeds, which is something else you could try.
