Can a 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Be Installed on a 2014 or 2015 Ram 3500 with Rambox Side Storage

Question:

Is there an after-market 5th wheel available for the 2014 or 2015 Ram 3500 Crew or Mega cab that has Ram Box Storage boxes? The factory cannot install the 5th wheel prep package on trucks with the Ram Box side storage, because they reduce bed with by 2inch on each side. But is there an after-market 5th wheel package that can work with a Ram Box-equipped 3500? I haven't bought the trailer or Ram yet. As an FYI ... I'll need a 30' or 33' flatbed to haul farm equipment, and a separate livestock trailer 24' or 26'. So I think I'd want a 20K rather than 16K hookup.

Since you plan on towing a fifth wheel trailer, the best option for the truck you are looking at, is an 8 foot bed without the Rambox. The issue with the Rambox is that the manufacturers of the hitches and installation kits have not tested for fit on models with the Rambox. As you mentioned, the bed is narrower which could interfere with the operation of the fifth wheel locking handle. Another issue you will run into is you will need to replace the OEM pin box with a Sidewinder. The reason for this is the Sidewinders won't rotate in the bed and hit the sidewalls.

We have heard customers who have installed 5th wheel hitches in Rambox models. While customers have said this works the manufacturers still have not tested and thus cannot confirm it.

There aren't any fifth wheel kits specifically designed for Rambox beds, but for a 2014 or 2015 Ram 3500 without a factory rail kit, the Curt custom install kit # C16426-204 will fit the same as if it didn't have the Rambox.

The fifth wheel trailer hitch I recommend is the Curt E16 # C16115. We also had a customer say they used this hitch and install kit in his truck with a Rambox. Although you mentioned you preferred a 20,000 pound capacity, and this Curt hitch # C16115 has a 16,000 pound capacity, you can still use a gooseneck adapter plate like # 16085 for your gooseneck trailers. Therefore, that will provide you a higher capacity (25,000 pound gross towing weight) to tow your heavier trailers.

If you are still interested in going this route, remember you need to replace the pin box as well with a Sidewinder. Sidewinders are very specific in which pin boxes they will fit. Therefore, once you purchase a trailer we would need to know the brand and model number of the OEM pin box in order to choose the appropriate Sidewinder for you.

However, if you decide the Rambox isn't the best for your setup, then I recommend a tool box like the DeeZee # DZ8170L (silver aluminum) or # DZ8170LB (black aluminum). This is a confirmed toolbox fit for a 2014 Ram 3500. Toolboxes for 2015 Ram 3500 hasn't been fit tested yet.

I included a video review and informative article for you too.
