Can Weight Distribution System Be Installed on an Unloaded Trailer

Question:

When installing this kit does the trailer need to be loaded with its final weight or can this be installed with the trailer empty of a load?

To get everything properly dialed in, ideally you'll want to trailer to be at its as towed weight. You could certainly install the weight distribution system using an empty trailer, but you'd need to re-adjust the tilt of the weight distribution head once the trailer is filled in order to distribute the correct amount of tongue weight to the front vehicle axle.

If your trailer is longer than 25 feet, using an additional friction sway control unit like part # 83660 is recommended.

I've linked you to the installation instructions as well as to an install video that you might find helpful.

I hooked up my weight distribution hitch to my fully loaded 16 foot cargo trailer. After I unload the trailer is it safe to pull the empty trailer without doing any adjustments to the hitch.

The ride may be a bit rough with the trailer unloaded but there shouldn't be any real harm in leaving the WD hooked up as-is.
