If you are using a pigtail for the brake controller, like part # 22292 from Tekonsha, the wires match up color for color on the Hayes-Lemmerz Energize III. You will want to cut off the black connector on the Tekonsha harness before splicing. There is a wiring diagram for the connector which shows which terminal is connected to which circuit on the instructions page, see link.
If you are connecting to the OEM wiring on the truck, it may not match up color for color. It is best to use the pigtail harness with the connector. Install is simpler and so is removal if you want replace the brake controller or if you want to sell the truck and keep the controller.
