Trunk Mount Bike Carrier for a 2014 Chevy Sonic LT 5dr Hatchback

Question:

Hi. Chevrolet says this Sonic is not designed nor intended to have a trailer hitch. So much for using our Yakama rear hitch 2 bike carrier for a his and her bike. What roof mounted carrier system and bike rack do you recommend? Thanks.

Any hitch for the Chevy Sonic would be a Class I, 1-1/4 inch hitch anyway so you are better off in the long run not using your hitch mount bike rack on that vehicle (because you'd have to use an adapter that would reduce the capacity of the hitch).

We have numerous 2-bike trunk mount carriers that will fit your 2014 Chevy Sonic. I have linked all of the options for you. But if you are looking for the absolute best option I would go with the OutWay # TH45JV. I have an older version of this rack and it is by far the best trunk mount carrier I have ever used.

And the new version is even vastly improved from the model I have. It is one of a small handful or trunk racks that can lock to the vehicle to deter theft. It also ahs an integrated cable lock for the last bike position. But my favorite features are the retractable cables. They make installation so fast and easy and they are much more durable than nylon straps used on other racks. I have linked a video review of this rack for you.

If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance. I have to use these adapters and without them my wife's bike would be at a severe angle and I would not be able to load my son's bike at all. I have linked a video showing how the adapter works.
