Hitch-Mount Cargo Carrier Recommendation for 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe
Question:
What is the best cargo hitch carrier for a 2014 Chevy Tahoe, and are they safe and secure? I do not want my luggage to fall off or to get stolen if I am making a stop.

We offer many cargo carrier options for vehicles like your Tahoe that have a 2-inch hitch, including the Curt Folding Cargo Carrier # C18151 that you referenced. These are offered in flat types like the Curt, ramped types for transporting wheeled cargo, and enclosed types that provide protection from weather as well as a degree of theft deterrence. It can also use a combination of products if you prefer. Say you really like the cost-effective Curt basket # C18151; you could use this and add to it a water-proof soft bag like Rightline # RL100D90. Security in this case can be increased by adding a cable lock such as # e98891.
You will want to check how much clearance you need at the back of the Tahoe for a carrier to safely clear the rear of the vehicle. The linked articles will give you a simple measurement you can take to determine this as well as provide food for thought about the carrier type that will best serve your cargo needs. You also want to note the tongue weight (TW) capacity of your hitch; this should be indicated on its safety sticker. Bear in mind that the weight of the carrier itself AND your cargo both count against the hitch's and vehicle's TW capacity. This rating cannot be exceeded.
If protection from the elements and security are primary concerns, then an enclosed carrier such as one of those shown on the included link. I really like the enclosed carrier from Yakima, their swing-away carrier # Y62VR, which is lockable and has many great features. It offers 10 cubic-feet of volume and 100-lbs of weight capacity, swings clear out of the way of your vehicle cargo. It also offers additional components for the EXO system such as an additional open or enclosed carrier, a bike rack, even a camping kitchen, (which is quite extreme :) .
Please feel free to email me after you review the articles, and I will be happy to work with you on recommendations that meet all of your requirements.
