Troubleshooting Turn Signals Blinking Rapidly With Trailer Connected to a 1983 Ford F-150

Question:

Hi, Im stumped on this one. I have a 4 way flat wired to my truck, 1983 F-150. The brake lights work. The running lights work. However, the turn signals with a trailer hooked up, it acts as if a bulb is burned out. It will blink, but extremely short and fast. With the trailer disconnected the turn signals work normally. I have one of those LED testers that hooks up with or with out a trailer and w/out the trailer hooked up the signals work normal. With trailer, fast and short again. It does blink on the correct side as well. It blinks fast/short regardless of the brake and running light condition on or off. Also, it does this with 3 different trailers. All 3 of those trailers work perfect with other vehicles 2007 Dodge RAM 2500, 1996 Legacy Outback, 2005 Toyota 4-Runner. Thanks for your time and any assistance you can provide.

The turn signal not working properly with a trailer connected to your 1983 Ford F-150 sounds like you will need to add heavy duty flashers from an auto parts store. These flashers have a higher capacity than the factory installed flashers.

If you have a Two-prong flasher on your truck, you can locate it by listening to the clicking sound, made by the signals when engaged, in the cab of the truck.
