Can Electric Brakes be Used on a Boat Trailer

Question:

Is it ok to use electric drum brakes on a boat trailer? Fresh water use only and I plan to unplug the connector before loading or unloading my boat. Ive read differing opinions on the web...your thoughts? Thanks

The general consensus is that electric brakes are not the best route for a boat trailer as electricity and water just don't mix well at all. Even if you unplug the trailer before you back it into the water the lingering moisture can cause problems. Especially over time since the assemblies will be submerged completely.

If you are dead set on going this route I would recommend letting the trailer dry for several minutes before plugging the trailer connector back in.

A better route that would give you the best of both world's would be an electric over hydraulic setup. This will give you the adjustability of electric brakes, the power of hydraulics, and the compatibility with water that you need.

I attached a help article on electric-over-hydraulic drum brake systems for you to check out as well.
