Compatibility of Trunk Mounted Bike Rack with a BMW X5
Question:
Is the Thule OutWay compatible with a BMW X5 ? Otherwise, which rack would be ?
asked by: Jerome
Expert Reply:
Thule does not recommend trunk mounted bike racks for the BMW X5 because the straps would need to be mounted to the upper edge of the rear glass or the plastic trim covering the glass itself. This mounting arrangement does not offer sufficient strength to safely hold the weight of the rack with the bikes installed. Suspending any weight upon that surface can cause the rear glass to shatter.
Your best bet would be to go with the appropriate hitch and receiver mounted bike rack for the vehicle. You do not mention the model year of your X5, I will provide links below to our hitch offerings. The hitches for the 2007-2010 model are all identical, as well as those offered for the 2000-2006 model years.
For a receiver mounted rack, you cannot go wrong with the Thule Hitching Post Pro, part # TH934XTR. The rack offers Thule quality at a bargain price.
