Using a Hitch Extender With Bike Rack on 2006 Honda CR-V

Question:

I have a 1 1/4 hitch. My bike carrier wont fit because of the spare tire on my SUV. I need an extender, going from 1 1/4 to 1 1/4. Do they make one? All I see is 1 1/4 to 2.

We have what you are looking for, the 6 Inch Hitch Extender for 1-1/4 inch receivers, part # HES6. This will extend your receiver by 6 inches, which will hopefully clear your spare tire.

One caution, though. Using this extender will lower the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by half. If you have a Class I hitch (see the label on the hitch) your tongue weight capacity will be 200 lbs. Using the extender would lower that figure to 100 lbs. This means that the bike rack and the bikes placed upon it could weigh no more that 100 lbs total.

I would recommend either going with a bike rack with a shank long enough so that the upright portion of the rack will clear your spare tire, or a rack that mounts to the spare tire itself. The Yakima spare tire rack # Y02599 will work on the rear of your 2006 Honda CR-V. The SpareRide bike carrier includes two extensions they will allow you to fit a wide range of spare tire widths. It will fit a spare tire width from P195 (7-11/16 inches) to P318 (12-1/2 inches).
