Replacement Catalytic Converter Recommendation for a 2003 Toyota Corolla

Question:

Hi, I was wondering are there two catalytic converters or one on a corolla ? Is it better to replace the oxygen sensor before replacing the converter ? If so, which oxygen sensor should I replace ? I live in California and my car needs to pass the emissions test, so should I replace the converter with and OEM part or after market part will work as well?

There are two catalytic converters in your 2003 Toyota Corolla. The correct replacement kit would be part # MF49461 as long as you aren't in California.

It would be impossible for me to know what is preventing your vehicle from passing emissions based on what you described. The best recommendation I can make is to have an engine code scan run on your vehicle (most auto parts stores will do this for free), write down the code numbers that your vehicle is throwing, and then google 2003 Toyota Corolla with the code numbers. This will tell you the most likely reason for the codes your vehicle is throwing.

The description of the code can be misleading as I once had an O2 sensor code on my car and it turns out I just had a dirty MAF sensor.
