Tire Chain Recommendation For 2014 Ram 3500 Dually
Question:
I am interested in a cost effective recommendation for tire chains that will be seldom used while towing a 5th wheel on mountain roads elevations up to 10,000 ft.. The truck is powered by a 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel engine, with a 4.10 axle ratio 850 ft-lb torque. The truck manual states I need tire chains on both front and rear axles U class type. I prefer using chains for single tires instead of dual tire chains for the rear set. I have been considering Glacier Tire PWH2828SC with rubber arm adjusters PW105. Also, are cable type an option Glacier Tire PW2028C or should I stay with chains due to truck specs? The tire size is LT235/80R17 Thank you.

Expert Reply:
The Glacier V-Bar Snow Tire Chains, part # PWH2828SC are a nice option for the LT235/80R17 tires you have on your 2014 Dodge Ram 3500 Dually. In my research I found that Class U needs 1.97 inches clearance above the tire and .91 inches on the inside of the tire to the firewall.
These chains have V-bar studs that bite into the ice and also feature built-in cam tighteners. For added security, the Glacier Multi-Arm Rubber Adjusters, part # PW105 would also be a good choice.
You can use the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, part # PW2028C for your tires, but they do not give you as much traction on slippery surfaces as the V-Bar chains you referenced.
