Can a 5th Wheel Trailer be Towed with Slider Hitch in Rear Maneuvering Position
Question:
Other than weight distribution, is there any reason for not using one of the rear positions for towing?

The reason it is not advisable to tow a 5th wheel trailer with a slider hitch in it's rear (maneuvering) position is indeed for concern with the trailer's weight distribution. The pin weight of a 5th wheel trailer needs to be centered just forward of the tow vehicle's rear axle. If the trailer were to be towed with the hitch in its rearward position the trailer pin weight would be behind the rear axle and cause the front end of the truck to lift up. This condition is dangerous as it means potential loss of front wheel braking and steering performance.
A slider hitch should ONLY be used in its rearward position for low-speed operation, never for on-the-road driving.
