How to Reset the Hopkins Trailer Break-Away Kit with Charger # HM20001
Question:
I have been told that once a system like htis engages, that it must be reset somehow before the trailer tires are free to roll. Is this simply a matter of reing the pin, or is there more to it?

You are correct. The system does not have to be reset electrically to allow for normal trailer operation. Instead, like you said, the pin, or what separates the contacts, needs to be put back into place. What happens is, if the trailer detaches from the tow vehicle, the mechanism separating the pins is pulled out. This allows the contacts to touch which in turn engages the break away system to stop the trailer.
