The 4-Pole Hardwire Kit, # 20250 is similar to the product you need but it is not quite the right one. The wiring harness for your 2004 Mercury Sable is Draw-Tite Wiring, # 18252. (If your trailer has additional lighting requirements you may need to use the Upgraded Circuit Protected Modulite with 4 Pole Harness and Hardwire Kit, # 119178KIT, to handle the added power draw from the vehicle.)
This wiring harness will need to be spliced into your vehicles existing taillight wiring. I have included a link below showing installation of this wiring harness on a similar vehicle.
You will use the included circuit tester to determine the functions of the wires. Turn on the left signal and find the wire that causes the tester to blink with the signal. You will connect that wire to the yellow wire on the harness using the quick splice included in the kit. The white wire is the ground and can be connected to any ground point such as the vehicle frame. Turn on the running lights and find the wire that carries that signal. Attach that wire to the brown wire on the harness. Next, turn on the right turn signal and find the wire on the passengers side that carriers this signal. Attach the green wire to it.
Once you have all the wires connected, I recommend mounting the 4-pole using a bracket like 18144 to secure the 4-pole.
