Will winch freewheel if you stop cranking with a load on the winch?

The Dutton-Lainson brake winch you referred to, part # DL15801 will indeed hold the load when the handle is released, but there must be at least 75 lbs of load on the line in order for this feature to work properly. The winch has a 1200 lb capacity.

The winch is designed for use with 7/32 inch cable, which is sold separately as part # DL24045.
